Novotny Lawrence is an associate professor in the
radio, television, and digital media department at Southern
Illinois University in Carbondale. He is the author of
Blaxploitation Films of the 1970s: Blackness and Genre and the
editor of Documenting the Black Experience: African American
History, Culture, and Identity in Nonfiction Films.
Gerald R. Butters, Jr. is a professor of history
at Aurora University. A Fulbright scholar, his previous books
include From Sweetback to Superfly: Race and Film Audiences in
Chicago’s Loop, Banned in Kansas: Motion Picture Censorship,
1915–1966, and Black Manhood on the Silent Screen. Dr. Butters has
lectured internationally, including an address to the European
Commission in Luxembourg.
