JUSTINE COUPLAND is Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Language and Communication Research, Cardiff University. She has published widely on on lifespan communication, discourse and ritual, and texts of identity. Her books include Language, Society and the Elderly: Discourse, Identity and Ageing, with Nik Coupland and Howard Giles (1991), the Handbook of Communication and Aging Research (co-editor Jon Nussbaum (1995) and Small Talk (2000). - RICHARD GWYN is Coordinator of the Health Communication Research Centre, Cardiff University. He has published articles on discourse, narrative, health in the media, and medical interaction and is the author of Communicating Health and Illness (2002). As a poet and essayist, his recent publications including Walking on Bones (2000), Being in Water (2001) and Lluis Penaranda/Iwan Bala (2001) a critical account of two contemporary artists.
