For almost 160 years south Wales, better known for coal and steel,
was a prolific centre of pottery and porcelain production. Items
ranged from everyday, mass-market objects to valued personal
commissions and desirable pieces of high fashion.
This book explores that period between the 1760s and 1920s when in
Swansea, Nantgarw and Llanelli a small group of remarkable people
were pouring their passion, talent and money into perfecting the
art of pottery and porcelain. We learn of their struggles with
processes and materials – the successes, and some catastrophic
failures. The book also celebrates with detailed new photography
the remarkable skills of the artists who decorated the items as if
painting on canvas. Little wonder, then, that this was a time when
ceramics in Wales truly flourished.

Am bron i 160 o flynyddoedd bu de Cymru yn gartref i ddiwydiant
crochenwaith a phorslen anhygoel. Cynhyrchiwyd amrywiaeth ryfeddol
o eitemau, o lestri bob-dydd i gomisiynau personol drudfawr a
gwrthrychau hynod ffasiynol.
Mae’r llyfr hwn yn edrych ar y cyfnod honno rhwng y 1760au a’r
1920au pan oedd grŵp bychan o arloeswyr yn Abertawe, Nantgarw a
Llanelli yn defnyddio eu talent, angerdd ac arian i berffeithio'r
grefft o greu crochenwaith a phorslen. Dysgwn am eu hymdrechion
gyda’r prosesau a deunyddiau – rhai yn llwyddiannus, eraill yn
fethiant llwyr. Gyda ffotograffiaeth newydd, manwl, lliw-llawn,
cawn ddathlu hefyd sgiliau hynod yr artistiaid a fu’n addurno’r
gweithiau mor gywrain. Prawf, os oedd angen, bod y cyfnod
llewyrchus hwn wir yn oes aur i gerameg yng Nghymru.
