Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109), the "Doctor Magnificus," was a Benedictine saint who united the mysticism and austerity of the contemplative and monastic life with the zeal and pastoral diligence of apostolic and episcopal ministry. Occupying a distinguished position amongst the great ecclesiastical leaders and spiritual and theological luminaries who have adorned the Benedictine Order, his writings similarly unite penetrating intelligence and clear, analytical reasoning with overflowing and ardent devotion and passionate imagination. May they continue to guide today's readers in their search for God and inflame in our hearts a desire for the joys and glories of our celestial homeland.
"'What eye hath not seen, nor ear heard.' This is what you may get
a glimpse of, following in the footsteps of a great theologian,
monk, and saint as he leads you up and beyond the horizons of the
visible world. " --Rev. Abbot Philip Anderson, OSB, Our Lady of
Clear Creek Abbey
"A fulgent beacon amidst a world in a dark winter of depravity,
Saint Anselm's treatise, The Glories of Heaven, is a solid anchor
of hope." --Fr. Lawrence Carney, author of The Secret of the Holy
Face: The Devotion Destined to Save Society
"It is a tremendous joy to finally have in English this superb work
by the 'Doctor Marianus et Magnificus.' Saint Anselm truly followed
the precept of his spiritual father, Saint Benedict: 'To desire
eternal life with all spiritual longing.' These pages are radiant
with the light of all our hearts' desire for our heavenly dwelling,
and contain some of the most edifying and consoling words I have
read about the realities of our true home in heaven. I pray that
many souls will be set alight with great zeal to hasten toward
their eternal dwelling with great hope and confidence. May we all
arrive together at that blessed state wherein the joy of the saints
is experienced through the vision of Him Who is the great Lover of
each soul: 'Christ, Who Himself is our peace.'"
--Rev. Mother Abbess Cecilia, OSB, Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus
