About the Author

Melissa Thompson is a Professor of Sociology at Portland State University. Her research focuses on crime, gender, and mental illness. Research work examines how reproductive planning and motherhood are treated within the criminal legal system.

Summer Newell is a Research Associate at the Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) at the VA Portland. She received her PhD in Sociology and Master of Public Health, School of Community Health at Portland State University.
