When you need a body, anybody will do.

Robin Williams and Holly Hunter head up an all-star cast in this Alaska-set black comedy, which sees a penniless travel agent faking his missing brother’s death for the insurance money. Life isn’t easy for travel agent Paul Barnell (Williams, ONE HOUR PHOTO) who’s stuck in a dead-end job, can barely make ends meet and whose wife Margaret (Hunter, THIRTEEN) is slightly deranged. Salvation comes in the form of a frozen corpse, which he finds by accident in a rubbish tip behind his office. Suddenly, Paul has an epiphany: if he can convince the authorities that the stiff is that of his missing brother Raymond (Woody Harrelson (NATURAL BORN KILLERS), he could cash in on his substantial life insurance policy. But Paul doesn’t count on being pursued by two would-be gangsters, a determined insurance investigator or an irate brother who’s very much still alive! THE BIG WHITE--with its unsettling snowy backdrop--will likely draw comparisons to comedy-crime caper FARGO. And although the humour here is decidedly less subtle in its approach, it’s no less effective.

Synopsis

When a down-on-his-luck and near bankrupt Alaskan travel agent discovers a dead body in the dumpster behind his office, he thinks it may just be the answer to his financial woes. Having been unable to claim on his long-missing brother's life-insurance policy without a body, he hopes to pass off his recent fatally-wounded discovery as that of his sibling. Just a few things stand in his way - a determined insurance investigator, two would-be gangsters… and the unexpected return of his brother!

Robin Williams is an infuriatingly uneven actor - uneven in his movie choices I mean and "The Big White" is a prime example of this. It's okay - I found parts of it quite funny, especially scenes involving the insurance investigator - but at the end of the day there's nothing special about it. The idea (using a dead body to try and wrangle some insurance money) is good and the cast is game but it just feels like more product. Average.
