  • Mount Hood Community College has been regularly releasing CDs of big bands and small combos consisting of jazz students in their program. The 2009 groups tackle standards, compositions by jazz greats, and originals (presumably by faculty or alumni, as there are no liner notes to identify the backgrounds of the composers). The passionate, soulful vocal by Lie Warfield in "Georgia on My Mind," backed by Sam Hirsch's down-home piano stands out. Another frequently recorded gem is "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," but Alan Baylock's creative arrangement provides a perfect backdrop for tenor saxophonist Sam Solano's burning solo. The Afro-Cuban piece "Cannonology" adds some spice to the sessions. It's also fun to hear students tackling a rarely interpreted piece like "Half the Fun," an overlooked gem from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's Such Sweet Thunder. Less satisfying is the contemporary Latin setting of "Take Five," a mundane feature for guitar, bass guitar, and percussion, along with the plodding funk arrangement of Wayne Shorter's "Adam's Apple." ~ Ken Dryden
