Performer Notes
  • Killing Joke: Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Paul Ferguson (vocals, drums); Geordie (guitar); Paul Raven , Youth (bass guitar).
  • Liner Note Author: Jerry Butson.
  • Always a fiercely idiosyncratic band, Killing Joke started out in the 1980s by melding post-punk, metal, New Wave, and even dub music together. Led by mercurial frontman Jaz Coleman, the British group unleashed an aggressive sound propelled by Geordie Walker's blistering guitar riffs, Youth's looming bass lines, and Paul Ferguson's tribal drumming. Although the quartet was repeatedly stalled by various lineup changes in the '80s and '90s, it nonetheless managed to garner a strong cult following and inspire numerous bands, including Ministry and Metallica, who recorded an excellent cover of Killing Joke's "The Wait" in 1987.
  • The appropriately-titled FOR BEGINNERS is a concise sampler of Killing Joke's output from '80 to '88, and it opens with the aforementioned classic "The Wait," an explosive track punctuated by Coleman's siren-like keyboards. As the compilation progresses in (roughly) chronological order, songs range from the ominous, droning "Butcher" to the energetic B-side "Wilful Days" to the pop-oriented "Obsession." With the exception of one track ("Butcher"), there is no overlap between FOR BEGINNERS and LAUGH? I NEARLY BOUGHT ONE!, another excellent Killing Joke compilation that surveys roughly the same era. Together, these two discs form an outstanding overview of this unique and influential group.
